5 family members killed after FedEx truck crashes into SUV in south Texas
Five family members died Tuesday in a two-vehicle crash between an SUV and a FedEx truck in south Texas, state officials are reporting.
The fatal wreck involved the 2019 delivery truck and 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe and took place near Eagle Pass, just east of the United States-Mexico border, according to Texas Highway Patrol staff Sgt. Rene Cordova.
Officials with the Texas Department of Public Safety identified those killed as Jose Martinez, 71; Noemi Jimenez Martinez, 61; Joanna Martinez, 34; and Samantha Martinez, 25, and a 10-year-old girl.
All four adults were pronounced dead at the scene. The girl, whose name was not released, died in an ambulance en route to a hospital, officials reported.
The FedEx truck was traveling east on U.S. Highway 57 and the gray 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV was traveling west on the same roadway, when the FedEx truck veered into the SUV's lane of traffic and struck it head on just after 7:50 p.m., officials say.
Initial reports by local TV stations incorrectly reported both vehicles were traveling eastbound before the crash.
The cause of the crash remained under investigation by troopers.
FedEx driver also hurt in Texas crash
The driver of the FedEx truck was also reportedly injured in the crash and taken to a hospital to be treated for unspecified injuries in the wreck, local media reported.
"Our thoughts are with all of those involved in this tragic accident, and we extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends who are mourning the loss of loved ones," FedEx spokesperson David Westrick told USA TODAY on Thursday. "Safety is our highest priority, and we are cooperating fully with the investigating authorities at this time.”
