5-year-old dies after being found unresponsive in pool area, Richland County coroner says

A child died Sunday after being found in the pool area of an apartment complex in Columbia, according to the Richland County Coroner’s Office.

Capri Robinson, a 5-year-old Columbia resident, is the child who was found unresponsive and died, Coroner Naida Rutherford said Tuesday in a news release.

The child was discovered by the pool at the Wildewood South Apartments in the 100 block of Sparkleberry Lane, according to the release. That’s in Columbia, in the area between Two Notch Road and Exit 80 on Interstate 20.

At about 6 p.m., Richland County sheriff’s deputies responded to the apartment complex after being told there was a child in the pool area that was not breathing, according to an incident report.

Deputies attempted “life saving measures,” and escorted an ambulance taking Capri to an area hospital, where the child was pronounced dead, the sheriff’s department said.

The coroner’s office did not say if it was a suspected drowning, and information about Capri’s cause of death has not been made public.

Rutherford said the “tragic incident,” remains under investigation by both her office and the sheriff’s department.
