52-year-old found dead after ATV accident: Musquash fire chief

The chief of the Musquash Fire Department says that they responded to a call of an ATV accident Monday and found a man deceased in the Chance Harbour area.

Chief Wayne Pollock said Tuesday that firefighters were called around 7:30 p.m. Monday to Highway 790 and found a deceased person in the ditch with an all-terrain vehicle in the "near vicinity." Pollock said the call had come in from a woman who was out for a walk and spotted the crash scene.

A press release from the St. George RCMP says that a 52-year-old from Lepreau died at the scene as a result of his injuries in what appeared to be a single-vehicle, single-occupant crash. An autopsy is underway to determine cause of death, according to the release.

"Our best-guess call at it was a single vehicle accident where it look like he lost control, hit the telephone pole and a tree," Pollock said, adding that the person appeared to have been there for "two to three days."

RCMP Sgt. Scott Mackenzie said that the time of the crash is part of the investigation and police are still working to confirm those details. He said next-of-kin notification had been completed.

Mackenzie said the call came in from someone who "observed" the site and said that anyone in a similar situation should call 911 and "approach as they deem fit."

"Coming across something about that obviously can be very stressful, but we can certainly point them in the direction if they need any assistance for any issues after the fact," Mackenzie said.

Pollock said the fire department called police, Ambulance New Brunswick and the coroner's office, and closed the highway until 11 p.m.
