52-year-old man taken into police custody in Corner Brook dies after found unresponsive in cell

A 52-year-old man died on Monday after being taken into police custody in Corner Brook, N.L.
The death was announced in a pair of posts from the Serious Incident Response Team of Newfoundland and Labrador (SIRT-NL) on X, formerly known as Twitter.
The civilian-led police oversight agency, which is investigating the incident, said the man was found unresponsive in his cell on Monday morning and was brought to Corner Brook's Western Regional Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) said that after it had detained the man, he was transferred to the custody of Her Majesty's Penitentiary (HMP).
There is no word yet on cause of death and no other details are available at this time.
SIRT-NL investigates incidents involving death, serious injury, sexual offence, domestic violence and other matters relating to police actions that are of public interest.
