6 details you missed in the first 'Deadpool & Wolverine' trailer, including nods to 'X-Men' and 'Avengers'
The first trailer for "Deadpool & Wolverine" aired on Sunday night during the Super Bowl.
The sequel brings Ryan Reynolds' foul-mouthed antihero into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Here are the details you may have missed in the trailer, including nods to "X-Men" and "Avengers."
Marvel Studios debuted the first trailer for "Deadpool & Wolverine" at the 2024 Super Bowl on Sunday, giving fans their first glimpse of Hugh Jackman's return as the iconic mutant from the "X-Men" movies.
The sequel follows Wade Wilson/Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) as he gets pulled from his reality into the Marvel Cinematic Universe by the Time Variance Authority – the organization from the "Loki" TV series that keeps the timeline in order.
While the Super Bowl trailer didn't reveal too much about the sequel, it did show off a few key Easter eggs and references to various "X-Men" and "Avengers" movies.
Here are the details you may have missed in the first "Deadpool & Wolverine" trailer.
2. 'Avengers' references in the Time Variance Authority
Once the Time Variance Authority yanks Deadpool out of his 20th Century Fox reality, he's brought to the organization's headquarters — which Marvel fans will already be familiar with from the "Loki" series.
When Deadpool wakes up in the TVA, agent Paradox (Matthew MacFadyen) introduces him to the concept of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
During the explanation, a bank of computer screens shows Wade clips from various Marvel movies, including "Avengers: Age of Ultron," "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," and "Thor: Ragnarok."
Considering Deadpool's fourth-wall-breaking comedic nature, it's going to be fun seeing him dropped into the often serious reality of the MCU like a fish out of water.
3. Wolverine in Madripoor
After Deadpool declares himself "Marvel Jesus," there are clips of him in a few different locations – including a moment in a fancy room filled with people in glamorous dresses and suits.
The shot focuses on a man in a white dinner jacket sitting at a table with his back to the camera.
Judging by his unique hairstyle and the white jacket, this is most likely Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) in the seedy city of Madripoor.
In the 1988 "Wolverine" comics series by Chris Claremont, the mutant goes to Madripoor on a mission and goes by the alias "Patch" to keep a low profile.
Patch's typical look includes a white jacket and an eye patch. It doesn't exactly change Wolverine's overall appearance, but hey, comics!
4. The 20th Century Fox Logo
This won’t be a surprise for anyone who saw the leaked photos from the “Deadpool & Wolverine” set, but the trailer also includes the ruined statue of the 20th Century Fox logo during a fight in the desert.
This is a very obvious tongue-in-cheek jab at Disney’s acquisition of Fox back in 2019.
The deal is the very reason that “Deadpool & Wolverine” takes place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the first place, since Disney now owns the rights to “X-Men” and “Fantastic Four.” So Marvel fans can likely expect to see these characters popping up in future movies for years to come.
5. Alioth and 'Captain America' motorbikes
The desert sequence of the film seemingly takes place in the Void, which was first introduced in the "Loki" series. It's a place at the end of time where everything the TVA disposes of is sent to and destroyed by a smoky being called Alioth.
Alioth is basically a giant purple cloud monster, and it briefly snatches up one of the TVA agents in front of Deadpool — who is so shocked by what's happening that he drops an F-bomb.
Just before the TVA agent gets eaten, there's a strange motorbike to the right of the screen with guns mounted on the front. This looks like the vehicle used by Hydra agents during World War II in 2011's "Captain America: The First Avenger."
6. Pyro
During the desert battle, there's a brief appearance from the flame-wielding mutant, Pyro (Aaron Stanford).
He was a member of the X-Men in 2003's "X2," before turning over to the Brotherhood of Mutants and becoming a villain in 2005's "X-Men: The Last Stand."
It seems like he's one of the people that Deadpool will have to kill on his mission for the TVA, although anything could happen in the multiverse.
7. A 'Secret Wars' comic
Yes, Wolverine is about to stab Deadpool in the final few seconds of the trailer, but look closely to the left, and there's an issue of "Secret Wars" comic series on the floor. This is important because Marvel Studios is building up to its "Avengers: Secret Wars" movie in 2025.
In Jonathan Hickman's 2015 comics series, the multiverse collapses — but Doctor Doom manages to weave chunks of different realities together to create Battleworld. It's an excuse for alternate versions of heroes and villains to collide.
The specific issue in the trailer, "Secret Wars" #5, explains how Molecule Man was used by an all-powerful race to wipe out the multiverse.
The fact that Deadpool existed in another universe and is being brought into the MCU is a clear sign that Marvel is prepping audiences for more multiversal chaos further down the line, and the "Secret Wars" issue is an unsubtle nod toward the future.
