UPDATE: The City of Hilliard Division of Police is continuing to investigate the incident, and investigators are not pursing criminal charges.

“According to our preliminary investigation, this was a terrible accident,” Chief of Police Michael Woods said in a statement on July 5. “We remain in contact with the family and will be keeping them in our thoughts over the coming months of recovery.”

A 7-year-old girl jumped off a trailer during a Fourth of July parade and was then struck by the vehicle, according to local news reports in Ohio.

The parade began at 9 a.m. July 4, according to the City of Hilliard. She left the float and was struck at about 10:05 a.m., according to a statement from the city.

The girl was then rushed to Nationwide Children’s Hospital with critical but not life-threatening injuries, WSYX reported.

The child plays softball with the Hilliard Girls Softball Association, according to a statement obtained by WBNS.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the player and her family,” the association said in the letter to families. “I want to thank our coaches, parents, and community members who were on the scene and assisted when the event happened. Thank you to our Emergency Responders for being there quickly and providing aid. Counselors will be made available to provide support for those who witnessed this traumatic event.”
