75-year-old bicyclist dies after being struck by out-of-control SUV in Independence
A 75-year-old bicyclist died after being struck by a crossover SUV careening out of control following a crash in Independence, a police spokesman said.
The bicyclist has been identified as Stephen Maginness of Independence, Sgt. Steven Boles, with the Independence Police Department, said in a news release.
The crash occurred about 2:15 p.m. Monday as the driver of Buick Rendezvous, a crossover SUV, was headed north on Little Blue Parkway. The driver of the Buick allegedly failed to stop at a red light and crashed into a Dodge Dakota that was headed east on R.D. Mize Road, Boles said.
The force of the impact spun the Buick through the intersection, hitting the bicyclist. Maginness later died at the hospital from the injuries.
The crash remains under investigation, Boles said.
