The six-year-old subject of an Amber Alert issued Tuesday was found safe, police say.

The boy and his mother, the suspect, were found in Whitney, N.B., about 21 kilometres from where they were last seen. Sgt. Lorri McEachern with the Miramichi Police Department said the two were found on foot near the 2008 black Nissan Xterra the mother was driving.

"Everybody is safe," McEachern said.

RCMP said the child's mother has been taken into custody.

Late Tuesday morning, RCMP said she could be armed, and said they located the SUV but not the mother and child.

RCMP said the SUV was found near a snowmobile trail in the Whitney area, 21 kilometres west of where the boy was last seen.

He had been last seen in the Miramichi area at 2:30 a.m., the alert said. Miramichi police said the mother left the Douglastown area, about 170 kilometres northeast of Fredericton, sometime overnight.

"If seen, call 911 immediately," the alert said.

"Police have concern for the child's well-being," Miramichi police tweeted.

An RCMP news release said the mother, 33, "does not have custody" of the boy.
