‘Anybody can be beat’: Douglass, Franklin Co. draw opposite lanes of girls 11th Region bracket

Frederick Douglass coach Daryl Moberly felt good about his team’s path ahead in the postseason after the girls 11th Region Tournament draw on Saturday morning at Lafayette High School, but he knows his squad can’t take anything for granted.

“We just got to come in and handle our business,” Moberly said after Douglass drew 43rd District runner-up Lafayette in Monday’s first round. “It’s win-or-go-home and anybody can be beat.”

The Broncos, the 42nd District champions who ranked No. 13 in the final Dave Cantrall Ratings top 25 of the season, landed on the opposite side of the bracket from No. 7 Franklin County, the chief threat to thwart their 11th Region title defense.

The 11th Region girls basketball tournament pairings include four schools from Lexington and four more out-of-Fayette County rivals. All girls first-round games will be played at 7 p.m. Monday at the home of each district champion from the 41st, 42nd, 43rd and 44th districts. Saturday’s semifinals and March 12’s finals will be played at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School.

The Flyers will host 44th District runner-up Madison Southern on Monday and, if they survive that, will take on the winner of a game between 43rd District champion Tates Creek and 42nd runner-up Henry Clay. Madison Central, the 44th District champs, will host Great Crossing to decide who will take on the winner of the Douglass-Lafayette game.

Some first-round games will be rematches of regular-season contests. Douglass topped Lafayette 51-34 on Feb. 6. Madison Central topped Great Crossing 75-59 on Dec. 16. Henry Clay routed Tates Creek 63-39 way back on Nov. 28, although both teams have improved since that battle in the first week of the season.

Although Franklin County and Douglass are the only ranked teams in the region, all but Great Crossing go into the tournament with winning records.

“I always say it’s three heavyweight fights, regardless, in this tournament,” Franklin County coach Joey Thacker said. “I think it will be a good week. … We’ve got to go do what we do and, hopefully our schedule has prepared us to do that, but it’s going to be tough.”
