What the Arlington Renegades need to do to beat the San Antonio Brahmas

The Arlington Renegades look to return to their winning ways against the San Antonio Brahmas. What are the key factors for victory?

Underwhelming QB play

Quarterback play has been a huge problem for the Renegades this season regardless of who has been their starter. They started the season with Drew Plitt. After he struggled in the first two games, they moved to Kyle Sloter who has similarly struggled through two games.

The Renegades QBs have thrown for the least amount of yards in the XFL. They are tied for the least amount of touchdowns thrown with three on the season. The Renegades have thrown five interceptions this season, the second-most in the XFL.

“I think he and Drew have played similarly through two games each,” said head coach Bob Stoops said Wednesday speaking with Renegades media via Zoom, “We’re not gonna hesitate if we have some really poor plays to switch the guys.”

Defensive bounce back

The Renegades defense gave up the most points of this season in the loss to the St Louis Battlehawks. The defense should bounce back this week against a middling Brahmas offense.

The Brahmas offense has one of the least explosive passing games in the XFL, ranking last in passes of 20-plus yards, 40-plus yards and have thrown for the third fewest touchdowns.

A Renegades defense that has thrived at times this season should have opportunities to limit the Brahmas’ passing attack and create turnovers.

Closing games out

The Brahmas have struggled to score in the second half over the last two weeks, scoring six points in four quarters of football.

In their last game against the Seattle Sea Dragons, the Brahmas either punted or turned the ball over on downs on every second-half possession. If that trend continues versus the Renegades, the Brahmas could be headed for their third straight loss.

The Arlington Renegades play the San Antonio Brahams on Sunday at the Alamodome at 8 p.m. CT (ESPN2 and streaming on ESPN+).
