Armdale Roundabout crash sends 3 to hospital with serious injuries

A driver has been charged and three people were seriously injured after a car crash near the Armdale Roundabout in Halifax last night.

Police say the vehicle smashed into a light standard just after 8:30 p.m.

The 22-year-old man driving, as well as a 25-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman who were riding in the car were taken to the QEII hosptial. Police say, "at this point," all three are expected to survive.

Patrick Hamilton works in the kitchen at the nearby Armview Restaurant and heard the crash.

"Me and a coworker heard a loud 'bang.' I thought it was thunder at first. We both looked out and we saw the car in pieces all over the road, saw that the front end was smoking, so I was like, 'Oh God, it's probably going to burst into flames,'" he says.

Hamilton says it appears the driver got confused and pulled into parking area, thinking it was a ramp heading into the roundabout.

He says he didn't hear any braking, just the crash into the pole.

"It didn't slow down, there was no screeching. It ran directly into the telephone pole. I thought at first that maybe he thought it was an onramp to the roundabout but the telephone pole's right in the middle of it," says Hamilton.

Halifax Regional Police Sgt. Pierre Bourdages says the driver is facing a charge of refusing to provide a roadside breath sample.

Police say the matter remains under investigation.
