Arrest warrant issued for suspected killer of Chicago police officer
April 27 (UPI) -- Chicago Police have issued an arrest warrant for a 22-year-old suspect in connection with the killing of a police officer this week.
The Chicago Police Department is looking for Xavier Tate Jr., who allegedly shot and killed Officer Luis Huesca early Sunday morning, according to the warrant.
A Cook County judge on Friday signed off on charges of first-degree murder.
The warrant accused Tate of knowingly and intentionally killing Huesca with a .40-caliber handgun.
CPD officers said they responded to a ShotSpotter alert in the 5500 block of South Kedzie Avenue just before 3 a.m. local time. Police found Huesca still in his uniform and shot multiple times.
Huesca was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.
Officers said Huesca had just gotten off duty and was on his way home when he was shot during a suspected carjacking.
Huesca's vehicle and service weapon were reportedly stolen. Police later recovered the vehicle, but his service weapon his still missing.
The police department ruled Huesca's death as "in the line of duty."
CPD has circulated video footage compiled from four separate locations showing Tate going from one convenience store to another in the hours before Huesca's murder. He was last seen walking near South Kedzie Avenue just before the murder took place.
Tate was arrested on March 6 and charged on an unrelated criminal trespassing misdemeanor charge but failed to show up for a scheduled court date Wednesday.
