Arson suspected in one of two overnight fires in North Highlands, Sacramento Metro Fire says

Sacramento County fire officials are investigating a Friday morning blaze at an abandoned commercial building in North Highlands as possible arson, one of two blazes crews fought overnight in the area.

Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District firefighters were called to well-established flames about 6:15 a.m. near the 5700 block of Garfield Avenue, at a property the district said has burned five times since July.

The building has been boarded up and abandoned since at least 2017 and once housed an above-ground pool sales business.

Metro Fire spokesman Capt. Parker Wilbourn said crews made quick work of the flames but arson investigators were called to the scene because of the multiple incidents crews have faced at the site in the past two months.

Another fire nearby kept crews busy earlier in the night.

Crews were called to a commercial fire on the 5300 block of Arnold Avenue in nearby McClellan Park just after midnight.

That building was under renovation at the time of the blaze, Wilbourn said, and no one was inside when firefighters arrived.

No injuries were reported in either blaze, he said.
