There's a sacred collection of TV movies to break out during the holiday season, like How the Grinch Stole Christmas! and A Charlie Brown Christmas. Those timeless classics have been seen by so many for so long that it would take something truly out of this world to stand out. This Christmas, something is coming from beyond the stars to make spirits bright...GROOT! Oh, and friends, as Disney recently revealed the first trailer for The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special set to premiere exclusively on Disney+ Friday, November 25.

Though not a cinematic return of Marvel's space heroes, this will be the Guardians' first solo outing since 2017's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Most of the original cast, including Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista and the voices of Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel, and the franchise's director/writer James Gunn, return for a special bit of season's greetings.

What is The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special about?

The last we saw the Guardians in their brief cameo in this year's Thor: Love and Thunder, the gang was a bit splintered and in search of a new adventure. The crew notices that Star Lord (Pratt) is feeling particularly down, having recently lost his love interest Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and noticing he'll be spending Christmas without her. Though not totally familiar with the mysterious concept of Christmas, the team of aliens and outsiders try to cheer their scruffy buddy up by throwing a party of holiday cheer and bright lights. Mantis (Pom Klementieff) and Drax (Bautista) even go so far as trying to get Star Lord the greatest present of all: Kevin Bacon, star of (as Star Lord put it) "the greatest movie in history:" Footloose.

Gunn, the director and co-writer of the first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies, wrote and directed the holiday special. Gunn might actually be making history as the first director to jump from Marvel to DC and back to Marvel, having created the recent Peacemaker series for HBO Max after writing and directing The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros. in 2021. Thanks to the critical and commercial success of both projects, Gunn was recently named co-chair and co-CEO of DC Studios. Fear not Guardians fans, as Gunn wrote and directed one more round of starship-based fun with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 set to hit theaters May 3, 2023.

Where can you stream The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special?

Disney+ is the only place where you can watch the Guardians save Christmas, along with their first two movies and other appearances in the MCU. The streaming service is available via an internet connection if you live in Australia, Austria, Canada, the Channel Islands, France, Germany, India, Ireland, the Isle of Man, Italy, Monaco, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom or the U.S. Disney’s direct-to-consumer streaming platform can be accessed from desktop browsers, mobile devices, game consoles and more. Viewers can use the IMAX Enhanced filter on the Movies page to see all films available in IMAX’s expanded aspect ratio, and select Disney+ movies will feature a tab labeled “Versions,” which will allow viewers to access either the IMAX Enhanced or Widescreen versions.

Disney+ isn't just the home of the MCU. There are the latest entries in the Star Wars universe, like the recent hit Andor or the coming third season of The Mandalorian, plus tons of Disney shows and movies, like the recently-released remake of Pinocchio. There are also classic episodes of The Simpsons, nature documentaries produced by National Geographic and even music specials from Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish. And all of that is on top of beloved Disney Channel shows and acclaimed Pixar movies!

How do you sign up for Disney+?

To stream those shows and movies, you can sign up for Disney+ right now and pay a monthly subscription of $7.99. You can also get Disney+ for a year with an annual fee of $79.99. After Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, Disney+ also features various Fox hits like Avatar, Ice Age and even select entries in the X-Men series.
