Ayo Edebiri Reveals Childhood Crush on Matthew Macfadyen's Mr. Darcy Got Her 'Grounded'
The star of 'The Bear' told the 'Succession' actor that her father had a strong reaction to seeing the face of his 'Pride & Prejudice' character on her computer screensaver when she was younger
Monday night was eventful for Ayo Edebiri — and not just because she won her first Emmy Award. The Bear star also got to meet her childhood crush Matthew Macfadyen!
After the ceremony, the 28-year-old actress told her fellow Emmy winner she once “got grounded” for having his face on her computer screensaver. More specifically, she said in the sweet moment captured by Entertainment Tonight that her father saw her still of Macfadyen as Mr. Darcy in 2005’s Pride and Prejudice and “was like, ‘Who’s this man?’”
Macfadyen, 49, chimed in, imagining Edebiri's dad's response: “Who’s this guy in the coat?” Edebiri went on to describe his Mr. Darcy as someone with “beautiful hair.”
Macfadyen was amused — but also impressed — by the anecdote. “She was grounded because she had a screensaver of me as Mr. Darcy on her laptop,” he told ET. “Good parenting. It’s good parenting. I hadn’t heard that, but that’s good.”

As it happens, Edebiri's family was in the audience at the Peacock Theater on Monday as she was named 2023's outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series win for The Bear. During her speech, she thanked both her “found family” on the show — including castmates and fellow Emmy winners Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach — as well as her “real family.”
"I'm making them sit kind of far away from me because I'm a bad kid," she quipped. "But I love you so much. Thank you so much for loving me and letting me feel beautiful and Black and proud of all of that. I just love you so much."
Edebiri added, “Probably not a dream to immigrate to this country and to have your kid be like, 'I want to do improv.’ But you're real ones.”

He continued, "Acting with you has been one of the most wonderful things in my career. Thank you, Nick. Thank you, sir. It's been a joy."
Finally, he said, "Thank you to my actual wife, Keeley [Hawes], my love and my best friend for being here."
