'The Bachelor' alum Matt James teams up with Dick's Sporting Goods for National Runners' Month, reveals favorite artists on his running playlist

As a former college athlete, Matt James knows a thing or two about maintaining a fitness regimen. So, it makes sense the first Black lead of "The Bachelor" makes an effort to incorporate exercise into his daily routine.

James is currently training for a marathon and has teamed up with Dick's Sporting Goods in honor of National Runners’ Month in May. This year’s campaign theme is “#SeeYouOutThere” and celebrates the many benefits of running while encouraging runners of all levels to get active.

"All of my seasons started at Dick's," the 29-year-old said. "Whether it was going there to pick up basketball, football or track gear, I was always at Dick's Sporting Goods. Running has also helped me navigate things from a mental health standpoint. I've used everything I'm going through and everything we've been going through as a country as fuel in my marathon training."

What's on James' running playlist?

James revealed he typically runs 15 miles a day in preparation for the race. Right now, his go-to sneakers are the Brooks men's Glycerin 19 running shoes. Features in those include an engineered mesh upper and 3D technology to enhance your fit. Flex grooves enhance midsole flexibility and a sleek transition zone makes moving from heel to toe soft and smooth.

As for what's playing in his ears, the North Carolina native constantly bumps a fellow North Carolinian: J. Cole.

"I could have a J. Cole album run all the way through. A lot of Lauryn Hill, too. Her lyrics take me outside of everything that's going on in my life and allows me to be super present in my run."

The former Wake Forest receiver also credited a popular sports program as one of his favorites, which makes sense considering their banter is must-see television as well.

"I love Colin Cowherd. I could listen to him and Joy Taylor all day. I'll have them going in my ear and play the whole three-hour podcast while running."

Millions nationwide watched James' quest to find a wife last fall. He admitted it was tough at first reading the criticism, even barricading himself for several weeks to escape judgement online and in person. With a new attitude and focus on turning every situation into a teachable moment, the philanthropist delivered some advice for future bachelor and bachelorette leads.

"The best thing I did was to surround myself with friends and family and they encouraged me to get back out there. It started with me exercising. Channel your energy into something positive. For me, it was making the decision to train for a marathon and triathlon. Make sure to always put yourself first."

National Runners' Month at Dick's Sporting Goods kicks off Saturday, May 1.
