Barn fire near Waterford causes $1 million in damage

Bales of hay made for potent kindling inside a barn near Waterford that was completely destroyed by fire on Friday.

First responders got to the blaze on Concession 11 Townsend in Norfolk County around 3:40 p.m. to find the barn “fully engulfed” by flames, deputy fire chief Jeff Smith said in an email.

No animals were inside, but the fire consumed hay bales and farm machinery.

“The barn and contents were a complete loss,” Smith said.

The damage is estimated at $1 million. All damaged property was insured.

Firefighters from five stations responded and got the fire under control.

As of Monday afternoon, fire officials were still trying to determine how the fire started.
