Netflix has released a first trailer for upcoming thriller Eric, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Gaby Hoffmann.

Set in 1980s New York, the limited series created by Abi Morgan, who also serves as head writer and executive producer, sees Cumberbatch in the role of Vincent Sullivan, a renowned puppeteer on a desperate search for his missing son Edgar.

Things takes an unexpected, eerie turn as Vincent, guilt-ridden and unable to cope with the loss of Edgar, clings onto his son's drawings of a blue monster puppet named Eric.

The titular puppet becomes Vincent's only ally in the search for Edgar, as the man's increasingly unhinged behaviour alienates his family, his colleagues at his children's TV show Good Day Sunshine, and the detectives trying to find Edgar.

Vincent is convinced that if he could get Eric on TV, Edgar will see it and come back home.

Set to be released on Netflix on May 30, Eric also stars Ivan Howe as Edgar, as well as McKinley Belcher III, Dan Fogler and Clarke Peters in supporting roles.

Elsewhere on the streamer, a new coming-of-age show starring House of the Dragon's Emily Carey has just debuted a trailer ahead of its May 30 premiere.

Titled Geek Girl and adapted from the young adult series by Holly Smale, the ten-part series stars Carey as 16-year-old Harriet Manners, a self-proclaimed "geek" whose life changes when she's discovered by a modelling agent during a school trip at London Fashion Week.

"This is a story for everyone who’s ever wanted to fit in," Harriet says in a voiceover during the clip. "Sometimes, to change your life, you have to stand out."

Eric premieres on Netflix on May 30.
