Best place for a summer vacation? This NC destination ranks among nation’s favorites

If you’re searching for a top-notch summer travel destination, one North Carolina town might be an ideal place to go.

That’s because the mountain tourist hot spot of Asheville was named one of the nation’s best places to take a trip this summer.

The Western North Carolina town ranked No. 8 in the country after winning a readers’ choice award from USA Today’s 10Best, which conducts travel-related contests online.

To create its list, 10Best turned to editors and travel experts for nominations. Then, readers were allowed to vote for their favorites no more than one time per day, according to findings published April 28.

While the results included waterfront towns and mountain destinations, Asheville was the only place in North Carolina to land a spot in the national rankings. It received nods for its quirkiness and surrounding scenery.

“This midsize city nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains has a robust art and music scene which can be experienced via the River Arts District, the Asheville Art Museum, the Moogseum, its downtown galleries, plus venues like The Orange Peel, The Grey Eagle, and the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium,” 10Best said. “Other draws include the popular Biltmore Estate (America’s largest home) and picturesque drives along the Blue Ridge Parkway.”

Asheville hasn’t only made its mark as a favorite summer destination.

The mountain town recently was named a top spot for fall getaways, and its Biltmore Estate ranked among the world’s “most beautiful places” to visit in the spring. Throughout the year, Asheville also has landed on lists of best cities for food lovers and beer drinkers, McClatchy News reported.

On the most recent list, the nation’s top-ranking summer travel spot was Mackinac Island in Michigan. Rounding out the top five were:

  • Mobile, Alabama

  • Door County, Wisconsin

  • Mystic, Connecticut

  • Chicago
