Bleeker Audio and Video to close after 56 years

An Ottawa institution for audiophiles and electronics enthusiasts is closing its doors after 56 years in business.

Bleeker Audio and Video has been in operation since 1961 with its current location at Clyde and Merivale roads opening in 1971.

But owner Hans Bleeker and his son Rob have decided to close the store after they were unable to find a suitable buyer.

The business began in 1961 when Hans Bleeker began doing repairs from his garage on St. Claire Avenue. After moving to a number of different locations — at Richmond and Churchill, on Carling Avenue — he brought the store to its current location.

"In those days you could stay open in Nepean until 9 p.m., but in Ottawa stores had to close at 6 p.m.," said Rob Bleeker. "So it really helped business."

Bleeker says they are aiming to close the shop by June 1, but it depends on how quickly they sell off their inventory.
