Blizzards end in SE Saskatchewan, digging out continues

Blizzard-like conditions that knocked southeastern Saskatchewan for a loop on Monday are winding down.

However, gusty winds and blowing snow with near-zero visibility are expected or occurring in some areas, Environment Canada said.

In the pre-dawn hours on Tuesday, blizzard warnings had ended but travel was not recommended on many highways around Estevan and Moosomin.

Highway 18 west of Estevan was closed as of 6 a.m. CST.

Police are telling drivers to check the Highway Hotline before heading out. The day before, multiple vehicles ended up in the ditch amid a variety of fender-benders, police said.

Meanwhile, many people are digging out from the 20 to 30 centimetres of snow that fell.

That includes Robert Johnson, who operates a bison farm.

"It snowed and it snowed, and it snowed some more," he said. "It howled and it blew all night."

Fortunately, bison don't seem to mind the cold, he said, although he was anticipating hard work ahead clearing the drifts and getting hay to his animals.
