B.C. man fends off cougar attack on his wife with a spear

Man's partner recovering after being attacked on remote island

In a scene that sounds like an image you might find painted on a cave wall, a B.C. man stopped a cougar that was mauling his partner by attacking the cat with a spear.

CBC News reported a 60-year-old woman was gardening near her house on Flores Island, near Tofino, on Sunday when a cougar viciously attacked and injured her severely. However, her common law partner appeared and fought the cougar away from the woman using a spear, according to the broadcaster.

BC Conservation Service Sgt. Ben York told CBC the same woman had fought off this cougar twice before the attack.

"She was able to ward it off once with a machete and the other time with a rake," York told CBC.

This time she was badly hurt, but her condition has been upgraded from critical to stable, according to the story. Officers found the cougar dead on Monday, apparently after it had succumbed to its spear injuries.

Last week, a video of two dogs trying to drive a cougar from a driveway at a home near Victoria, BC went viral. The owners of dogs Kovu and Teaka heard their pets barking aggressively and recorded a video of their standoff with a hissing cougar.
