Superman is often considered to be America’s hero but a woman in the United Kingdom has found out no crime is too small or too far for the Man of Steel.

The woman was taking out cash from an ATM in Gloucester City, England when a man approached and tried to steal it from her, according to the BBC.

Antonio Cortes, 32, had already donned his red cape for a nearby fundraiser when he heard the commotion and sprang into action, chasing the would-be mugger down and pinning him on the ground until police arrived.

“I could see the woman was distressed and thought ‘something has to be done’ so I just went with it,” Cortes told the BBC.

Cortes, a trained Thai boxer, said police arrived minutes later and bank staff quickly ushered the woman to safety inside.

When all was said and done, the woman’s husband approached Cortes offering a grateful handshake in thanks.

“It’s very rewarding - a good thing and I feel good for it definitely,” Cortes said.

Cortes had been on break and having breakfast at a pub when he first heard the woman’s screams. The real-life hero works with Give A Smile UK to raise awareness about children with disabilities and send them and their families on respite holidays.
