Injured Winnipeg woman’s comment about finishing beer makes SNL skit

When Canadian stories are big they make international headlines and while one story out of Winnipeg is rather serious it had Seth Meyers cracking jokes on Saturday Night Live.

On New Year's Eve, a Winnipeg woman somehow survived being shot in the eye in an attack that took the life of her friend.

A source told the Winnipeg Free Press, who originally reported the story Thursday, the woman was severely impaired either by drugs or alcohol or both and had no idea she was injured. "It was like she was oblivious to what had happened."

Other impaired people were also in the home, which is known by neighbours as a place where drug users spend time.

The body of Michael Warren Sinclair, 46, was found inside the house and he was pronounced dead at hospital.

Despite one person being dead and the woman being shot in the eye, the source said, "She didn't want any treatment until after she finished her beer."

This hilarious comment spurred the Weekend Update bit.

"A woman in Canada who was shot in the eye during a New Year's Eve party refused medical attention until she finished her beer," said Meyers as he set up the zinger. "She's what's known in Canada as a 'keeper'."

As for the woman, she remained in hospital last week in stable condition and is expected to survive. No arrests have been made in the attack.
