Man shoots terrifying video of tornado that tore through his house and killed his wife

Back on April 9 last year, a tornado ripped through Fairdale, Ill., and 85-year-old Clarence “Clem” Schultz’s house was directly in its path.

Schultz and his wife of 24 years, Geri Schultz, were home when the tornado approached, according to The Daily Herald. Schultz told the publication he was headed upstairs to grab some camping lanterns when it hit.

As you can see in a video uploaded to Vimeo on Monday, Schultz decided to take out his camera phone to film the ensuing tornado. Little did he know it was coming straight for him.

Warning: Video contains disturbing footage

Unfortunately, both Geri Schultz and the couple’s next door neighbor died in the twister. Clem Schultz barely escaped. He suffered a compressed broken vertebra which he told The Daily Herald is still causing him some pain.

Clem Schultz shared his video with a meteorology student who had been chasing the storm, The Daily Herald reports. The student used the clip as part of a thesis studying the internal structure of tornadoes. The rare glimpse from inside the tornado is due to be shown at an international atmospheric science convention in California, according to The Daily Herald.

“I did not know if I wanted to see that video,” Clem told the publication, though he says eventually mustered up the courage to watch it.

‘I’m proud of it,” he told the paper. “My video is saving lives.”
