Must-see videos of the week – April 5

From how hard it is to brush teeth in space to making maple syrup the old fashioned way, we've seen some great videos this week. Here are some of our favourite:

1. Purse thief runs right through glass window

An Australian thief is still on the loose after stealing a purse from a woman at a shopping centre, but his getaway wasn't quite like you may see in the movies. He didn't manage to see which side of the glass was the door and ran right into the window, shattering the glass and falling to the ground. Bystanders helped him up, unaware he was running away from a crime. He then ran and escaped with an accomplice in a stolen car.

2. Hadfield shows difficulty of brushing teeth in space

Since Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield has arrived at the International Space Station, he has been amazing us with the beauty of Earth through the photos he posts to Twitter. He's also been giving us some insight into how he and the other astronauts live. Everything from how they celebrate Easter, make a peanut butter sandwich to how they sleep. Now he shows us how hard it is to brush your teeth in space. There are no taps or running water. They must first squeeze a bit of water out of a bag to wet the brush while making sure all of it goes on the brush and none escapes into the instruments. When they are done, they have to swallow the toothpaste.

3. Making maple syrup the old fashioned way

While we can pour maple syrup on our pancakes all year round, it can only be made about 25 days a year in areas like Southern Quebec, where most of the world's maple syrup is made. The nights have to be below freezing and the days above in order for the sap to drip. We are just getting to the end of another season now and producers are in full swing, like workers at Sucreire de la Montagne in Rigaud, Quebec. They do everything the old fashioned way, including using their 1940s tractor. It takes 40 litres of sap to make one litre of syrup and per litre is about 10 times the price of oil.

4. New cameras to live stream the Earth

A Vancouver-based company is planning to put cameras on the outside of the International Space Station and these cameras will shoot pictures and videos that will go up on the Internet. Scott Larson is CEO of Urthecast and hopes this will be happening by the end of the year. There will be two cameras - one for stills and one for video. He says the still camera will be able to capture anything that is at least five metres big. The video camera will be able to captures anything bigger than one metre. You won't be able to see people, but you will be able to see the car you are driving in. And you will know when the cameras will be able to see you. The cameras blast off for the space station in October and are expected to start rolling by the end of December.

5. Beer cans spill onto road in Mexico

A truck carrying beer collided with a train in Mexico Monday, sending hundreds of cans spilling onto the street. Well, local residents in Gomez Palacio weren't just going to let the beer sit there so they flooded the streets and as quickly as they could grabbed the cans. It caused a major traffic jam and we're guessing some major hangovers the next day.
