Ont. man gets apology after receiving letter for not handing out Halloween candy

An Ontario man who received a letter from kids after not handing out Halloween candy got the belated treat he was looking for - an apology from the person who wrote it.

In a story Yahoo! Canada News first brought you Monday, Tom Ibbitson received a letter in his mailbox from kids calling themselves Children of the Hood asking why he didn't pass out candy on Halloween.

They write that the lady who used to own the house handed out candy apples, "but last night there were no candy apples. Come to think of it there was no candy at all from your home!"

The kids explain that Ibbitson could fix the problem by bringing candy to their houses the Saturday after Halloween when they would have eaten most of their collected treats.

The Toronto Hydro worker, who just moved into his new home in Oshawa, posted the letter and his response on Facebook. His friend later put both on Kijiji saying he was looking for the author.

"Dear Children of Entitlement (and likely their parents)," starts the Kijiji post, which has since been taken down. "You have gone ahead and reminded me of why I do not want children, and why I weep for the future."

He told The Canadian Press he originally wrote the letter as a way to vent, but it received a lot of support from strangers.

"At first I didn't really know how to feel...am I wrong for not handing out candy to the children in the community?" says Ibbitson, who was playing darts with his friends on Halloween, to The Canadian Press. "Or am I right for just living my life and doing what I do?"

But now, Ibbitson is hoping to put the past behind him.

"The author of the letter came by last night to apologize," Ibbitson said Wednesday to Canoe. "My goal was just to find out who wrote it. Now that I have, I don't really feel the need to continue spreading the story."
