Forcing your own lifestyle on another person is never a good idea, and one vegan is finding out the hard way that this applies to pets too.

After posting a picture of their dog on Tumblr and boasting about how happy the pup is to eat a “healthy” vegan meal, what followed were outraged responses.

User Sfveganyogi shared their dog, Maggie’s meatless diet consisting of “puréed sweet potato, puréed brown rice, sprouted organic tofu, chia seeds, and digestive enzymes.”

And then asked: “Does she look excited? She is!”

The photo of sad looking Maggie and the casserole dish did not sit well with some people, who shared the health risks associated with feeding a plant-based diet to a dog.

One Tumblr user simply pointed out the obvious: “This dog does not look excited, this dog looks malnourished.”

They then broke down everything that is wrong with the dog’s “healthy” meal.

Another commenter weighed in on the debate, siding with a vegan based diet. And provided an anecdotal experience of vegan and vegetarian dogs enjoying their healthy lifestyles.

“Side reminder that some dogs can have vegan meat and be completely nourished and content, loving and excited over their meals. See: Onision’s two dogs, Dobs and Leelu,” wrote ladywarblerforever.

And then added: “Do dogs and cats eat meat? Absolutely. With the right nourishments, can they live, thrive, and live a happy and healthy life without it? You bet your sweet ass they can. Stop bagging on this person for feeding this to their dog.”

Her comment was quickly shut down by an animal expert, who gave a thorough lesson on why protein diets are important for dogs.

Dogs and wolves “share 99.8% of their mitochondrial DNA,” user hand-the-bastard wrote. Since a wolf is a carnivore, dog’s “have the same physiological and nutritional needs as those carnivorous predators.”
