Saint John, N.B. tells man to unfix potholes he repaired

Mike Defazio, who filled in some potholes on Saint John's Broadway Avenue, has been ordered by the city to remove the gravel.

If you want something done right, you’ve got to do it yourself.

This is most likely what one Saint John, New Brunswick man was thinking when he took it upon himself to fill the potholes around his city with gravel.

Auto body shop owner Mike Defazio was fed up with the city’s lack of interest in fixing the potholes so he decided it was best he do it himself, according to QMI Agency.

The city was not pleased.

They ordered Defazio to undo all of his pothole work. They told him that if he did not dig up the potholes he had filled, he would face a fine.

“If they don’t fix these holes, I’ll probably do it again,” said Defazio. “I’ll use better gravel,” he added.

As seen in this short video clip from the City of Saint John, it's a more intensive job than just putting in some gravel, which is likely why the city wasn't happy with Defazio's initiative:

Defazio isn’t trying to cause problems, but he is frustrated that the city doesn’t seem to want to fix the roads.

And as a man who works on cars for a living, he probably hates to see the damage the hacked up roads are causing these vehicles. Who can blame him after the winter we’ve had?

“I just want to see the stuff fixed,” he said.

But Defazio obeyed the city’s orders as he was told on Friday, and he undid the work on the potholes that he had originally done.

He got a call saying he will not be fined.

The city still seems to have no timeline in sight as to when the potholes will be filled.
