Montreal Mayor Michael Applebaum arrested in corruption investigation

The Mayor of Montreal has been arrested by Quebec police's anti-corruption force.

No, not that other Montreal mayor tied to the province's massive corruption investigation. The other one – the gentleman chosen to sit as mayor after that last guy stepped down amid the same scandal.

Michael Applebaum was arrested at his home Monday morning. Police will hold a press conference to discuss the matter later this morning.

Applebaum, the first Anglophone Montreal mayor since 1912, said he when he was elected last November that he would sit as an interim mayor until the next election later this year.

Montreal City Hall was raided last Feburary as part of an investigation into improper dealings between public officials and members of Quebec's construction industry.

Applebaum told reporters at the time that he was not the focus of the investigation.

Applebaum was chosen to replace Gérald Tremblay, who stepped down as mayor in November amid allegations his party was involved in illegal political financing.

Longtime Laval, Que., mayor Gilles Vaillancourt was charged last month with fraud and gangerism as part of the same investigation. He also stepped down in November.
