Dallas City workers rescue fellow employee from submerged truck

Cell phone video shows the dramatic effort to break into a man's pickup truck and pull him out from the lake. As Anna Werner reports, the rescuers say they had only minutes to act.

Yesterday morning, two City of Dallas workers came to the rescue of a fellow employee after they spotted a partially submerged truck with its brake lights flashing in White Rock Creek.

Raul Alamillo Jr. and Brent English jumped into the water to save the driver, who had suffered a medical emergency and lost control of his truck. The man was conscious inside his vehicle but unable to move, already submerged up to his shoulders when his co-workers reached him.

Alamillo and English used a wrench to open the truck’s door and a hammer to break its window. They then pulled the driver out of the vehicle to safety.

Two other city employees also arrived on the scene to help.

Alamillo and English said that they didn’t know they were saving a co-worker until mid-rescue, when they recognized him in the vehicle.

“It was just common sense,” Alamillo said of stopping to help. “I knew someone needed our help so I had to stop. It didn’t matter if it was another City employee or a citizen.”

The quick-thinking rescue was caught on camera.

The driver of the truck, who has yet to be identified in the press, was taken to a nearby hospital. He is in stable condition and is expected to fully recover.

“These two City of Dallas employees went above and beyond their regular call of duty,” said Dallas City Manager A.C. Gonzalez. “They are heroes and deserve to be commended for saving their co-worker’s life.”
