High-school girls rescue injured Alberta hiker

Four high-school girls rescued an injured hiker stranded on the on the Ribbon Creek Trail in Alberta's Kananaskis Country last week. Alanna Driscoll, Scarlett Zhu, Madeline Weedle and Ashleigh Morris had been hiking through the woods when they came across Barry Delano.

Earlier that morning Delano, 58, had trekked out on his own when the rock gave way leaving him pinned underneath. He managed to free himself and apply a makeshift splint out of dead branches, but he was bleeding profusely and had a broken leg.

"I tried to get up and walk but kept falling down and it really hurt so I just lay there and waited," Delano told Sun Media.

Thanks to Driscoll's father, a survival teacher, the girls were well-equipped to handle the situation.

"He [father] packed a tarp, tent poles, candles and a lighter, first aid kit and a bandage, and Maddy had bear spray with us, so we were set," Driscoll told CTV.

Two of the girls stayed with Delano while the others ran for 90 minutes to get help. When his son Stephen arrived on the scene, Delano was in good spirits among strangers.

"These girls are certainly heroes, I'm so glad they found him," Stephen said.

Delano will need six months of rehabilitation following surgery, yet, he is already planning next year's hike with his son.
