Hungarian man builds working wooden car

Istvan Puskas, 51, is making headlines for his head-turning car — created almost entirely out of wood.

The suspension, frame and gearbox are made out of wood. The fuel tank is an old beer barrel.

The few non-wooden parts — specifically the engine and steering wheel — are recycled from old vehicles:

"The car is powered by an engine from a Polish-made Fiat 126, while the steering wheel came from an old Mercedes Benz vehicle," the Telegraph reported.

"My aim was to make it out of wood as much as possible. A wooden car must be made from wood!" Puskas said.

The agricultural worker spent four months in his workshop in Tiszaors, Hungary, building the vehicle. It kept him busy during the long, cold winter.

"I love to work with wood. And I like to create unique things which attract interest from people," Puskas told the Associated Press.

Oddity Central reported that local policemen "were so impressed with his efforts that they’ve allowed him to ride in it on the local lanes in his village," despite Hungarian laws making it impossible for Puskas to legally register and drive his wooden car.

Puskas plans to put his wooden car on the market. With the proceeds, he hopes to fund his next personal challenge: a wooden three-wheeled vehicle.

"Most probably I will sell it. I have no place to store it," he said. "I have no garage, I have nothing. It can be good for a collector, for somebody who likes nostalgia, for somebody who likes to drive slowly."

This isn't Puskas' first wooden vehicle. He previously built a wooden motorcycle.
