Boaters get ‘once in a lifetime’ close encounter with ‘curious’ sea creature. See it
Boaters in California were recently “treated to a once in a lifetime” experience when a massive humpback whale approached them — and visited for more than 30 minutes.
The tourists encountered two humpback whales during the Nov. 8 trip, one of which was extra “friendly,” according to a Facebook post from Monterey Bay Whale Watch.
“One individual in particular really felt curious as he/she rolled around and spy-hopped by the boat for over 30 minutes!” the post said.
The enormous creature got so close, boaters were able to “see the little details,” including the whale’s “individual hairs growing from their tubercles,” the tour agency said. Photos show close-ups of the whale’s skin and barnacles.
Humpback whales are preparing to migrate south from California to their winter breeding and calving grounds off the coast of Mexico, according to the agency.
Social media users were wowed by the encounter.
“So incredible! For some reason I always want to pull off those barnacles,” one person wrote.
“I would absolutely cry with that encounter,” another commenter said.
“So majestic!” a third person commented.
