Bob McKillop, Judy Rose to appear at “Sports Legends” book signing Saturday in Charlotte

Two local sports icons — former Davidson basketball coach Bob McKillop and former Charlotte 49ers athletic director Judy Rose — will sign copies of the “Sports Legends of the Carolinas” book Saturday from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Park Road Books in Charlotte.

McKillop and Rose are two of the 33 sports legends featured in the coffee-table book, which consists of exclusive one-on-one interviews and more than 100 rare and one-of-a-kind photographs. They will appear alongside the book’s authors, writer Scott Fowler and photographer Jeff Siner.

The “Sports Legends of the Carolinas” coffee table book is published by The Charlotte Observer and Pediment Publishing and retails for $39.95. Park Road Books (4139 Park Road) has already sold out of its initial stock of the books, but more will be on hand for this event.

The “Sports Legends of the Carolinas” coffee-table book features exclusive 1-on-1 interviews with 33 sports icons, along with more than 100 photographs. The book is based on the popular Charlotte Observer interview series. The sports legends interviewed include Steph Curry, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Roy Williams, Mike Krzyzewski, Dawn Staley, Jake Delhomme, Steve Spurrier, Danny Ford, Armanti Edwards and Jeff Gordon.

McKillop coached Davidson’s men’s basketball team for 33 years, winning 634 games from 1989-2022 and most famously shepherding the college career of future NBA superstar Steph Curry. His Davidson teams made the NCAA tournament 10 times. His son, Matt, replaced him as Davidson’s head basketball coach.

Rose worked for the Charlotte 49ers athletic department for 43 years, from 1975-2018. She spent the final 28 years of that career running the school’s athletic department as only the third female AD in the country on the Division I level. She added seven total sports to Charlotte during her time as AD, most notably the football program in 2013.

Armanti Edwards scheduled for Dec. 9 book signing

If you can’t make the McKillop/Rose book signing, there is another opportunity to meet a sports legend and get a signed book the following week.

Armanti Edwards, who starred for Appalachian State as one of the best college quarterbacks in the Carolinas, is scheduled to appear at a book signing at Audi Charlotte (9300 East Independence Blvd. in Charlotte) on Saturday, Dec. 9, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Books will be available for purchase there, or can be bought in advance at Park Road Books or SportsLegendsBook.com.

Edwards led the Mountaineers to FCS national championships in both 2006 and 2007 as well as an extraordinary road win over Michigan that is still widely considered the biggest upset in college football history. He was later a third-round draft pick of the Carolina Panthers, who attempted to convert him to wide receiver. He later had a successful career as a wide receiver in the CFL.

Proceeds from Edwards’ appearance will go to The Charlotte Observer’s Empty Stocking Fund, which provides money to the Salvation Army of Greater Charlotte’s Angel Tree program.
