Boise State names backup QB. Albertsons Stadium expansion project gets budget upgrade

After two closed scrimmages and 15 fall camp practices, Boise State coach Andy Avalos has named a backup quarterback for starter Taylen Green.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Maddux Madsen will be the No. 2 QB, beating out true freshman CJ Tiller for the important role.

“CJ and Mad Dog have done a really, really good job, and we’re excited about what they both bring to the table,” Avalos told the media Wednesday. “But obviously we’ve got to declare one as we move forward into game week. So we have declared that Maddux will be the second-string quarterback at this point.”

Boise State opens the 2023 season on Sept. 2 at No. 10 Washington (1:30 p.m. Mountain time, ABC).

Madsen, who hails from American Fork, Utah, completed 6-of-9 passes for 53 yards and one interception in the Broncos’ first scrimmage of fall camp. In the second scrimmage, he completed 75% of his passes with a touchdown, Avalos said last weekend.

The 5-foot-10, 201-pound right-hander played in just one game for the Broncos last season. He got on the field in a 41-3 victory at Nevada, going 3-for-4 for 43 yards, including a 35-yard completion. He also ran the ball once.

Madsen amassed huge numbers during his high school career, combining for more than 7,000 yards and 86 touchdowns in his junior and senior seasons.

Washington loses top running back for season

Washington will be without its top returning running back for the 2023 season.

Coach Kalen DeBoer announced Tuesday that sophomore Cameron Davis sustained a season-ending lower-body injury during practice last week.

“Cam is a huge part of (the offense),” DeBoer told The Seattle Times. “It’s his second year in the system, works so hard, leads the right way, disciplined guy. He not only does a great job with the ball in his hands, but in pass protection he knows everything inside and out.”

DeBoer also announced that sophomore offensive lineman Gaard Memmelaar — a Middleton High graduate — would miss the season with an injury.

North end zone expansion receives budget increase

The Idaho State Board of Education on Wednesday approved an increase to Boise State’s planning and design budget for its proposed North End Zone update to Albertsons Stadium.

The budget was increased from $2.5 million to $5 million to allow the university to avoid costly project delays if planning and design expenses exceed projections.

Once the planning and design portion of the project is complete, Boise State will need board approval for construction. Preliminary cost estimates for the project are between $32 million and $40 million.
