Which Bollywood Dad Do You Love Most?

[From The Bridal Box- All Your Bridal Needs @ One Place]

Bollywood, over the years, has provided us with some wonderful characters. We love some. We hate some. However, we can’t ignore any of them. Especially, the dads. They’re lovable, affectionate, smart, stylish and sometimes, they’re absolutely comedic. Sometimes, we hate a particular father character because he’s very tough on his offspring. However, we realize only later that he was tough for a reason. And then, we love the character. We say, whatever he did, he did with the best of intentions in mind.

When a girl brings a guy home and says that she wants to marry him, the father says ‘no’ straight away. However, after careful vetting, he agrees to the alliance. He wants his daughter to be happy. When a son is going down the wrong path, the father throws him out of the house. However, when the son gets his first pay check and gives it to his father saying, “You were wrong to throw me out. I’m not useless, here’s my first pay check,” the father is proud of his son. He’s proud that his son has proved him wrong.

Such are the incidents that occur in life, and our actors, especially the elder statesmen, portray these characters brilliantly. They do so with the utmost ease. It’s natural to them. After all, they’re all fathers in real life too. However, it’s the things they do on screen that catch our attention. They leave a lasting impression on us. As I said, whether we love them or hate them, we can’t really ignore them. So, here are a few father characters. Ones that we relate to so much, because they remind us of our own dad in some way or the other. Let’s take a look.

1. Anupam Kher In Wake Up Sid

He loves his son very much. He just cant get enough of him. So, he keeps clicking his pictures. But then, Sid grows up and starts to go out. He doesn’t want to be with his father any more. He wants to hang out with his friends. There’s nothing wrong in that.

However, he starts under performing in his studies. His father doesn’t like it. He warns Sid a million times and then says, “Get out of my house. You good for nothing idiot.” Sid goes out into the world and starts clicking pictures. When he gets his first pay check, he goes to his dad and tells him that he’s got a job and hands over his pay check to him and says, “Thanks pa. I wouldn’t have gotten to where I am today if not for you. I know that I’m a natural photographer because you were one too. You used to click a lot of pictures. Why did you stop?” His dad says, “You grew up and started going out with friends. You didn’t have time for my photography. And to me, photography only meant, clicking your pictures.” It’s a story that’s been told a million times and in a million different ways. However, Anupam Kher just nails the tough dad character. And Ranbir Kapoor, who knew he could act so well?

2. Amrish Puri In Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge

Honestly speaking, Amrish Puri to me is the villain in Karan Arjun and Mr. India. To me, his most famous role is that of Mogambo and 'Mogambo khush hua’ will forever remain his most famous dialogue in my mind. However, he plays the father in DDLJ and nails the character. He’s just brilliant. At first, he won’t let two lovers unite. To keep them apart, he forces his daughter to move from London to Punjab. I mean, come on, cut her some slack. She’s in love with a guy. It’s no crime. However, Baldev Singh has promised his daughter’s hand in marriage to an old friend. So, when he says 'no’, it’s a 'no’. But then, he sees the guy for who he is and realises that no one can love his daughter as much as he does and he says to Simran, “Ja Simran, jee le apni zindagi.” Probably the most famous line in Bollywood history.

You’ve got to hand it to the man. He simply is the greatest actor of our times. And as Bhashkor Banerjee, he delivers a stellar performance. I mean, he’s the nagging father who loves you to death. You love him just as much and accept all his crap. You love him so much that you agree to take him on a road trip to Kolkata from Delhi. And what do you get in return? He tells others that you aren’t a virgin. He means well though. He wants you to be with him. He wants you for himself. He tells you that you shouldn’t get married 'cause you might end up losing your independence.’ But that’s just his opinion. I mean, come on dad. 'Let go’ is what I would say but I know the feeling. I can totally relate to him. Can you?

Now, Lucky Singh is just amazing. I mean, the poor chap is unwell according to Munna but he loves his daughter so much that he’s willing to take on Munna bhai and Gandhi ji together. However, he’s doing it for his daughter. He wants her to marry Mr. Khurana’s son. Mr. Khurana wants the old age home at any cost and wont agree to the nuptials unless Lucky Singh gets him the house. Lucky obliges. There’s just one small problem though. Lucky’s daughter was born during the wrong time of the day. How can she be at fault for it? So, Lucky and his wife decide to lie about their daughter’s birth time. Now, that’s just sweet, isn’t it? First, you go up against Munna and Gandhi ji and then, you lie to get your daughter married. I’m sure Lucky must have known that “All’s fair in love and war.”

6. Amitabh Bachchan In Viruddh

Vidyadhar Patwardhan is a normal father who’s son is studying in England. He goes to the airport to pick him up and realises that Amar has brought his girlfriend along. They take her home and wait for Sumitra to decide Amar’s fate. She brings Jenny in and treats her like a daughter. Amar and Jenny get married. So, they send her back to London. They also ask her to consider re-marrying someone else. After all, she should move on. Now, I for one just love the movie and am a huge fan of Mr. Patwardhan’s character 'cause I know, my dad would do the same for me. I’m sure yours would too. And so, we can all relate to the character. After all, he’s just a common dad like yours and mine.

7. Anil Kapoor In Dil Dhadakne Do

He’s rich. He’s famous. He’s got it all. The perfect family. Or so it seems. Truth to be told, aren’t the families that seem perfect the most dysfunctional ones? Well, it’s the same story with the Mehra family. Mr. Kamal Mehra unknowingly forces his daughter to marry an idiot. He wants his son to take care of the family business. The problem is, his son has no interest in the family business. His daughter wants to divorce her husband. The Mehras say 'NO’ to the divorce and tell their son that he won’t get his plane unless he marries the girl they choose for him. He may seem selfish at first but when the husband gets physical with his daughter, Mr. Mehra loses it. He almost beats him up. Which father wouldn’t? And then, he goes against the authorities to help his son find his love. Way to go dad!

8. Kader Khan In Dulhe Raja

image

Rich dad. Snobbish daughter. Who hasn’t heard of that? The daughter though loves the wrong man. So, Mr. Singhania forbids her from marrying the man she loves. He also states that she can marry anyone but him. So, the daughter decides to date her father’s greatest enemy 'Raja’ just to spite him. She later dumps him for the man she loves but realises that the man she loves likes her money more than her. When things get rough, Raja comes to the rescue and at the end, 'Raja’ becomes 'Dulhe Raja’. I can’t really relate to Mr. Singhania’s character but I adore the fact that he loves his daughter so much that he goes to his enemy to save her. I’m sure you adore that trait too.

9. Utpal Dutt In Golmaal

image

He’s a man’s man. He hates men without a moustache. He thinks that they are characterless. He likes sports but looks down on youngsters who are knowledgeable about sports. He also hates youngsters who wear modern clothes. He also develops a hatred towards twins. When he finds out that his daughter has married Lucky aka Ram, he refuses to bless the couple. He is furious. However, he is forced to accept the union upon everyone’s insistence. It’s a comic role, but it’s a role of a father who stands for what he believes in. However, he ultimately accepts his daughter’s choice of partner which is what all loving fathers do.

10. Kamal Haasan In Chachi 420

image

The character defines what fathers can do for their daughters and Kamal Haasan pulls it off almost as well as Robin Williams does in Mrs. Doubtfire. The movie without doubt was a rip-off of the Hollywood classic but Kamal Haasan does justice in every sense. It’s probably the greatest portrayal of a man playing a woman in Indian cinema. The movie is all about a father’s love for his daughter and the lengths he can go to in order to stay connected with her. It’s just brilliantly done. But imagine this. If your daughter was taken away from you, wouldn’t you do everything you could to stay connected and get her back? I certainly would.

The other two are engaged to their significant others. So, Ramkishan ji decides to retire from the business and enjoy old age by relaxing at home. However, circumstances force him to make tough decisions. He plays the father who’s crushed between his love for his three sons and the decisions he has to make against them. He hates that he is in a situation where he has to choose one son over the other and he portrays it perfectly. Honestly, which one of us wouldn’t be torn to shreds if we had to take sides between kids?
