Here’s our bout-by-bout breakdown of No. 1 Penn State wrestling at No. 11 Michigan

When No. 11 Michigan and No. 1 Penn State face off on Friday night, all 10 bouts should have ranked wrestlers against one another — assuming both squads’ usual starters hit the mat.

Not only that, but there will be 12 All-Americans combined competing as well.

Nittany Lions’ true freshmen Braeden Davis and Tyler Kasak will get their toughest tests of the season. And all eyes will be on 174 pounds, where a matchup of NCAA champions should take place.

With a win, Penn State will get the program’s 995th victory.

Below is a look at how we think the dual will play out.

Penn State’s Braeden Davis controls Indiana’s Michael Spangler in the 125 lb bout of the match on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2024 at Rec Hall.
Penn State’s Braeden Davis controls Indiana’s Michael Spangler in the 125 lb bout of the match on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2024 at Rec Hall.

125 pounds: No. 14 Braeden Davis vs. No. 3 Michael DeAugustino

Nate Cobler: Davis has been rolling all season long, and has a grittiness to him that it doesn’t matter who he wrestles he’s going to win. He’s 10-0 and has bonus points in all but three of those wins. He hasn’t had an opportunity to face a caliber of wrestler like DeAugustino though. The grad transfer for the Wolverines from Northwestern is a two-time All-American — finishing fourth in 2022 — and four-time NCAA qualifier. He hasn’t finished any lower than fifth in the Big Ten Championships. DeAugustino is 6-1 with his loss being an injury default to Cornell’s Brett Ungar in the Cliff Keen Invitational in December. Prediction: Davis by decision.

Jon Sauber: Davis has been wrestling at a high level for Penn State, but this is going to be his toughest test to date. DeAugustino is a two-time All-American who had plenty of success at Northwestern before he transferred to Michigan and will be looking to slow Davis’ momentum. There’s a decent chance Davis takes his first loss of the season this weekend, but even if that happens, the arrow is point up for Penn State at 125 pounds. Prediction: DeAugustino by decision.

Penn State’s Aaron Nagao wresltes Indiana’s Isaac Thornton in the 133 lb bout of the match on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2024 at Rec Hall.
Penn State’s Aaron Nagao wresltes Indiana’s Isaac Thornton in the 133 lb bout of the match on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2024 at Rec Hall.

133 pounds: No. 4 Aaron Nagao vs. No. 6 Dylan Ragusin

Cobler: One would’ve thought these two might have crossed paths at some point last season with Nagao competing for Minnesota, but they never did. When you compare the two, they don’t have the greatest of records against common opponents. Nagao holds a 9-6 mark as Ragusin has a 12-13 record against wrestlers like former Penn State wrestler Roman Bravo-Young, Oklahoma State’s Daton Fix and Ohio State’s Jesse Mendez, to name a few. Prediction: Nagao by decision.

Sauber: Nagao has done an admirable job of replacing Roman Bravo-Young after the Nittany Lion departed following the 2022-2023 season, even if he isn’t the same dominant force as his predecessor. Like the opening bout, this one should be fairly evenly matched between two wrestlers who should be competing for All-American status come March. Ragusin is undefeated so far this season, but that could come to an end Friday night. Prediction: Nagao by decision.

Penn State’s Beau Bartlett controls Indiana’s Danny Fongaro in the 141 lb bout of the match on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2024 at Rec Hall.
Penn State’s Beau Bartlett controls Indiana’s Danny Fongaro in the 141 lb bout of the match on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2024 at Rec Hall.

141 pounds: No. 2 Beau Bartlett vs. No. 25 Sergio Lemley

Cobler: There isn’t much out there on Lemley since he’s a true freshman. The young Wolverines wrestler racked up a 150-7 career mark in high school. As for his collegiate record, he’s 10-3 with two of his three losses coming in the Cliff Keen Invitational to Oklahoma State’s Tagen Jamison and Northern Iowa’s Cael Happel. Both of those wrestlers are ranked in the top 10 at 141 pounds. Bartlett’s experience will be too much in this one. Prediction: Bartlett by decision.

Sauber: Bartlett isn’t a big-time point-scorer against top competition, which puts him at risk for close losses. Lemley has been impressive for the Wolverines this year with his most recent two losses coming against high-level competition, and his first appearing to be an outlier to open the year against Northwestern’s Joel Vandervere. He should be able to keep this one close, and that might be enough to pull off the upset. Prediction: Lemley by decision.

Penn State’s Tyler Kasak controls Indiana’s Graham Rooks in the 149 lb bout of the match on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2024 at Rec Hall.
Penn State’s Tyler Kasak controls Indiana’s Graham Rooks in the 149 lb bout of the match on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2024 at Rec Hall.

149 pounds: No. 12 Tyler Kasak vs. No. 6 Austin Gomez

Cobler: Kasak enters this one riding high after picking up back-to-back upsets over ranked wrestlers. Like Davis, Kasak hasn’t had the opportunity to face off with a wrestler like Gomez, who is in his seventh year of college wrestling. Yes, the Nittany Lions practice room is the best in the country, and Kasak has lost to Bartlett, but that was at a totally different weight. Penn State fans can probably remember Gomez tossing Bravo-Young a couple of years ago in an Iowa State singlet during the Southern Scuffle, but again a totally different weight class. Look for Gomez to cool off the freshman. Prediction: Gomez by decision.

Sauber: This has a chance to be one of the most interesting bouts of the dual. Kasak has been on fire for Penn State at 149 pounds. He’s 3-0 at the weight this year for the Nittany Lions with a 15-0 technical fall over Indiana’s Graham Rooks, who is No. 14 in the country. Gomez has the same record this season for the Wolverines and is easily Kasak’s biggest test in his young career. That being said, he’s looked ready to roll at the weight so far and should be primed to keep his momentum going this weekend. Prediction: Kasak by decision.

Penn State’s Levi Haines controls Indiana’s Zack Rotkvich in the 157 lb bout of the match on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2024 at Rec Hall.
Penn State’s Levi Haines controls Indiana’s Zack Rotkvich in the 157 lb bout of the match on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2024 at Rec Hall.

157 pounds: No. 1 Levi Haines vs. No. 9 Will Lewan

Cobler: These two squared off in the Bryce Jordan Center dual last season. They traded escapes to go to sudden victory, where Haines collected a bout-winning takedown to a roaring crowd. Lewan was No. 10 in the country at that time, which seemed to springboard Haines’ season that ended in the NCAA finals. Lewan, who is 5-3, hasn’t seen the mat since the Cliff Keen Invitational, where he suffered those three losses. This one won’t see sudden victory this year. Prediction: Haines by decision.

Sauber: We’ll see who goes for the Wolverines at this weight, with Will Lewan not competing for over six weeks and Zack Mattin filling in while he’s been out. Frankly, it may not matter who goes for Michigan, though, because Haines looks to be on his way to potentially winning his first individual NCAA title. He finished second last season and has taken a clear step forward. This could be the first chance for bonus points in the match for either side. Prediction: Haines by major decision.

Penn State’s Mitchell Mesenbrink wrestles Indiana’s Tyler Lillard in the165 lb bout of the match on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2024 at Rec Hall.
Penn State’s Mitchell Mesenbrink wrestles Indiana’s Tyler Lillard in the165 lb bout of the match on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2024 at Rec Hall.

165 pounds: No. 9 Mitchell Mesenbrink vs. No. 7 Cameron Amine

Cobler: This will be a fun one to watch, and a great appetizer for the main course coming next at 174 pounds. Last year, Amine suffered a loss to Alex Facundo in ultimate tiebreakers inside the BJC. Good news for Amine, Facundo is redshirting this year. Bad news for Amine, Mesenbrink appears to be better than Facundo. The Penn State wrestler has been a scoring machine, tallying bonus points in 9 of his 11 wins. Amine keeps things close in his bouts, and he’ll have a little motivation coming in off a 6-4 loss to Michigan State’s Caleb Fish. Prediction: Mesenbrink by decision.

Sauber: Mesenbrink has been everything Penn State fans could have hoped for in his first year as a Nittany Lion and will put his undefeated record to the test against Amine. Amine has suffered three losses this season, all to wrestlers ranked inside the top 10. Mesenbrink loves to score and should push the pace in this one. While he’s younger and more inexperienced, his ability to force the action should lead him to victory and continue his rise up the rankings at 165 pounds. Prediction: Mesenbrink by decision.

Indiana’s Robert Major can’t get away from Penn State’s Carter Starocci in the 174 lb bout of the match on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2024 at Rec Hall.
Indiana’s Robert Major can’t get away from Penn State’s Carter Starocci in the 174 lb bout of the match on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2024 at Rec Hall.

174 pounds: No. 1 Carter Starocci vs. No. 4 Shane Griffith

Cobler: This one will be worth the admission as both guys are NCAA champions. Obviously, Starocci is a three-timer at 174 pounds. Griffith won the 165 pound title three years ago for a dying Stanford program that ultimately stayed alive. However, everyone saw what Starocci did to Virginia Tech’s Mehki Lewis back in the NWCA All-Star Classic in November. Griffith is no Lewis, and Starocci is entering on back-to-back technical falls. Prediction: Starocci by major decision.

Sauber: This match will get the hype because of the accomplishments both wrestlers have under their belt, but Starocci has a decided advantage in what looks like is going to be his best year as a college wrestling. And that’s saying something considering he’s a three-time national champion. Starocci is steamrolling everyone in sight and while Griffith should be difficult to get the fall or technical fall against, a major is absolutely in play. Prediction: Starocci by major decision.

Penn State’s Bernie Truax wrestles Northern Iowa’s Parker Keckeisen in the 174 lb bout of the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic at Rec Hall on Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2023.
Penn State’s Bernie Truax wrestles Northern Iowa’s Parker Keckeisen in the 174 lb bout of the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic at Rec Hall on Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2023.

184 pounds: No. 5 Bernie Truax vs. No. 15 Jaden Bullock

Cobler: Truax missed last weekend’s Big Ten opener due to being sick. He’ll get his first taste of Big Ten action against a top-15 opponent in Bullock. Truax will also be looking to bounce back from losing to Oregon State’s Trey Munoz. Bullock redshirted after starting as a true freshman for the Wolverines, but missed a bulk of last year due to an injury. He’s 12-5 this season with losses coming from South Dakota State’s Bennett Berge, younger brother of former Nittany Lion Brady Berge, Arizona State’s Tony Negron, who is a former Penn State wrestler, and Nebraska’s Lenny Pinto. However, Bullock is entering the match with a win over No. 22 Layne Malczewski of Michigan State. Prediction: Truax by decision.

Sauber: Truax couldn’t get the job done against Oregon State’s Trey Munoz, but he’s a different level of wrestler than Bullock. The Wolverine junior comes in as an underdog for good reason and is at a disadvantage against the three-time fourth place finisher at nationals. Truax dropped down to this weight after joining Penn State heading into this season and looks like he’ll be able to take advantage of that the rest of the way. Bonus points are on the table here, but Bullock might be able to do enough to keep it relatively close. Prediction: Truax by major decision.

Penn State’s Aaron Brooks controls South Dakota’s Tanner Sloan in the 197 lb bout of the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic at Rec Hall on Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2023.
Penn State’s Aaron Brooks controls South Dakota’s Tanner Sloan in the 197 lb bout of the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic at Rec Hall on Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2023.

197 pounds: No. 1 Aaron Brooks vs. No. 32 Bobby Striggow

Cobler: Brooks has only wrestled six matches this year, which is only three less than Striggow. He’s also secured bonus points in all six of the wins — three pins and three technical falls. The three-time NCAA champion comes into this match on back-to-back 19-4 technical falls. Striggow is 4-5 and on a two-match losing streak. He won’t snap that streak on Friday. Prediction: Brooks by technical fall.

Sauber: There’s not a whole lot to say here. Brooks is a three-time national champion and has been dominant in his limited action this season. We’ll see later in the year if any 197-pounders can challenge the Nittany Lion this year, but Striggow surely won’t be the one to do it. This one could be over quickly. Prediction: Brooks by technical fall.

Penn State’s Greg Kerkvliet controls Indiana’s Nick Willham in the 285 lb bout of the match on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2024 at Rec Hall.
Penn State’s Greg Kerkvliet controls Indiana’s Nick Willham in the 285 lb bout of the match on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2024 at Rec Hall.

285 pounds: No. 1 Greg Kerkvliet vs. No. 4 Lucas Davison

Cobler: If the dual begins at 125, it’ll end with a top-five tilt between Kerkvliet and Davison. These wrestlers have competed against each other once with Kerkvliet topping Davison, who was with Northwestern at the time, 5-3, in the Big Ten consolation semifinals of the 2022 championships. Davison is a four-time NCAA qualifier, placing only twice. Kerkvliet is a three-time NCAA qualifier and has placed all three times, finishing runner up last year to Michigan’s Mason Parris. Prediction: Kerkvliet by major decision.

Sauber: Kerkvliet could be in for his first NCAA title this year with Gable Steveson no longer wrestling at Minnesota and he’s done well to get his momentum going thus far. Kerkvliet is 6-0 and has already defeated Davison in the past, back in the 2022 Big Ten Wrestling Championships. The Nittany Lion earned the decision victory then when Davison was at Northwestern and should be able to do the same on Friday night. Prediction: Kerkvliet by decision.

Final score

Cobler: This Michigan squad is full of phenomenal transfers in Gomez, DeAugustino, Griffith and Davison. Penn State has their own talented trio of transfers in Nagao, Mesenbrink and Truax. Ultimately, the Nittany Lions have just too much fire power in the upper weights. Prediction: Penn State 31, Michigan 3.

Sauber: The final score won’t do this dual justice because there are plenty of matches that could be coin flips in Ann Arbor. That being said, I think the Nittany Lions hold the slight edge in most of the closest bouts and their heavy hitters should be in position to put this one to rest. Prediction: Penn State 29, Michigan 6
