Brace for snow mixed with rain, plus risk of freezing rain, this afternoon

A wintry blast of weather is expected to sweep into Toronto on Thursday.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the city and it says Toronto should expect snow mixed with rain, plus a risk of freezing rain in a few areas, starting this afternoon.

The snow mixed with rain is forecast to turn into rain by Thursday evening. Freezing rain could fall in a few areas before the snow mixed with rain turns to rain, the federal agency said.

Then rain will fall for much of Friday before it tapers off on Friday night.

Environment Canada said a total of between 15 to 25 mm of rain is possible on Friday.

Roads could be slippery before the mixed precipitation turns to rain, the federal agency warned in the statement.

It said a low-pressure system from Missouri, which will track toward Southern Ontario in the next two days, is responsible for the wintry weather.

Precipitation from this system is expected tor reach areas southwest from Wingham, Blyth and Northern Huron County to Hamilton on Thursday, then move into the Toronto to Barrie corridor on Thursday afternoon.
