Bret Michaels may be a rock star who has sold millions of songs and performed thousands of shows, but one thing that stands out about it all for him is being a father.

"Hands down, I love being a dad," the Poison frontman, 61, tells PEOPLE ahead of the release of a new A&E Biography series that follows his life and career. "I wanted to be a dad. I love being a dad. ... It's an incredible feeling."

Bret shares two daughters — Raine Michaels and Jorja Michaels — with his longtime partner, Kristi Lynn Gibson.

The "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" singer says that despite his illustrious career, there have been some "painful spots" that have affected his relationships with his two children.

"When there was something big going on [in their lives], but we were, let's say, overseas or somewhere, those are tough moments," Bret explains, before noting that "modern technology" is "the best thing," as it allows them to always be connected.

"Raine Michaels, right in the action with the San Diego Seals live on ESPN+," he wrote, in part, in the post's caption.

Jorja, meanwhile, was born on May 5, 2005. She launched her own hair and beauty account, J Bleu Hair, late last year, where she revealed she's attending hair school in Los Angeles.

Bret's youngest helped him write his song "Unbroken" for his 2019 album of the same name. The track is about staying positive even during tough times.

"This song is about triumph versus tragedy. This song right here is about being stronger than the storm," Bret wrote in a post on his website. "I have been a diabetic my whole life — five injections a day — been through a lot. I hope that this song will empower you and make you feel awesome."
