Bridge beams put in as residents invited to watch

About 200 residents were expected to watch the works over the weekend [Guildford Borough Council]

Work to install 19 bridge beams - each one 24 metres long - got underway on Saturday, with residents invited to watch on viewing platforms.

A new road bridge in Ash, designed to reduce traffic and accommodate for new homes being built, will replace a level crossing.

Viewing platforms meant residents could see the 19 bridge beams being lowered in to place.

Two of them weigh 45 tonnes and the remaining 17 weigh 27 tonnes each.

The work was done by a 750-tonne crane and will continue until Monday.

A Guildford Borough Council spokesperson said nine beams had already been installed by 12:00 BST on Saturday and that good weather was helping the work progress.

In total 200 residents were expected to attend, having booked tickets via email.

Permission has been given from Network Rail to carry out the work as part of a scheduled railway closure.
