Here is what Broncos players said about ending long losing streak against Chiefs

Broncos tackle Garett Bolles hadn’t been part of all 16 consecutive losses to the Chiefs, but he’d played in plenty of those games.

That’s why Bolles was thrilled the Broncos won 24-9 Sunday and snapped the long losing streak to the Chiefs

“It feels great, man,” Bolles said, per postgame quotes provided by the Chiefs. “You know, they’re a great team. They have a great culture of winning. I don’t think we have been, what eight years or something like that since we’ve beaten them. The crowd was electric. We got the job done today. And you know, just one game at a time, man.”

Bolles, who was drafted by Denver in 2017, praised Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who was ill on Sunday.

“But that quarterback’s a freak over there, Mahomes is,” Bolles said. “All respect to him and the friendship that we have, and he’s an animal. He can run around, make plays and all a sudden, you know, you can be up by 14 and all of a sudden you’re down by 14.”

Here is what other Broncos players said, via the postgame quotes.

Mike McGlinchey

The tackle is in his first season with the Broncos.

“It feels so good for the guys that have been here and that have fought tooth and nail to keep this place afloat,” McGlinchey said. “Justin Simmons, Garrett Bolles, Tim Patrick, Courtland Sutton – guys that have been here for such a long time and put their heart and soul into this organization. To come out and beat these guys, the defending world champs and No. 1 team in the AFC, that’s a huge win. That’s a win that’s going to make us believers. It’s a win that can change an organization.”

Justin Simmons

This is the safety’s eight season with the Broncos.

“It feels good to win at home. I think for me, I get from the outside looking in, you look at it as a fan base and things like that, that there is this streak and everybody wants to talk about it,” Simmons said. “But literally, each and every year, it is a new team. It is a new head coach, a new staff in general. You come into this, like I told you guys heading into this week, we’re only 0-1 (against the Chiefs this season). We lost to them on Thursday night two weeks ago, and we’re coming into this game expecting to win. It’s a new team, it’s a new look, and that is kind of how it is.

“I know some guys have been here, myself obviously the longest, have been here and have faced them multiple times, but it is a new team. It is a new year, and that is kind of the mindset you have to have going into it. Really happy we won. That is a heck of a team, we know that watching them. It just feels good to win.”

Josey Jewell

The linebacker is in his sixth season with the Broncos.

“We can put that to bed, so that will be nice to get rid of that. Hopefully, we go on a little streak here,” Jewell said.

Jonathon Cooper

The linebacker is in his third season in the NFL, all with the Broncos.

“I feel great,” Cooper said. “Finally getting over this hump, finally changing this thing around. That’s how we finish. That’s a great team win and over a good team too. I’m really happy right now. I’m ecstatic.”

As for the Chiefs’ streak...

“What streak? What streak are we talking about? It’s over now,” Cooper said. “It’s a one-game winning streak for us, that’s what we’re talking about.”

Alex Singleton

The linebacker is in his second season with Denver.

“In the two years that I’ve been here, that is the biggest team game we’ve played,” he said. “And you know, that is how you beat that team and that is how you just continue to grow and win games.”

Russell Wilson

The quarterback is in his second season with the Broncos.

“Every win in the National Football League is a good one,” Russell said. “It feels great, but this one meant a lot. Winning matters and this one meant a lot, obviously. I know there’s been a lot of tough times over the years here with the Chiefs. It’s a really good football team on that side.

“Obviously, they’re champions (and) everything else, but we had a great week of practice. We knew that we could come out and win this football game and play great in front of our fans. Just to win, beat the Chiefs at home in front of our fans, in front of Broncos Country.”
