Bruce Springsteen Joins John Mellencamp for Surprise Performance of 'Pink Houses': 'My Good Friend'

Springsteen made a surprise cameo at Mellencamp's concert at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark on Sunday

New Jersey concertgoers got a special surprise this weekend.

Near the end of John Mellencamp's concert at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, New Jersey on Sunday night, Bruce Springsteen joined him onstage for a special duet of "Pink Houses."

For the set, "The Boss," 74, was without a guitar, however, as he sang the second verse, the crowd cheered for him.

The "Hurts So Good," 72, singer shared an Instagram Reel of their duet following the show, which features Mellencamp introducing Springsteen before kicking off "Pink Houses."

"My good friend and guest @springsteen joined us on “Pink Houses" @njpac #mellencamptour #springsteen," the singer/painter captioned the clip.

Sunday night's performance isn't the first time the duo has performed together.

They performed "Pink Houses" and "Glory Days" in December 2019 at Sting’s semi-annual Rainforest Benefit, per Rolling Stone.

In 2022, the "Dancing in the Dark" performer was featured on Mellencamp’s Strictly a One-Eyed Jack LP with "Did You Say Such a Thing,” “Wasted Days,” and “A Life Full of Rain.”

The "Small Town" musician opened up about his friendship with Springsteen in an interview withSiriusXM’s E Street Radio in 2021.

“I would consider Bruce now, one of my better friends in the music business. Bruce and I talk quite a bit,” he said. “I think he and I relate to each other because we’ve had similar experiences of growing up in a small town. Starting out, big band leaders.”

He further elaborated on their relationship in an interview with Billboard in 2022.

"Bruce has a wonderful way of having humility and tenacity, all at the same time," he told the publication. "He can get his ideas across with humility and an ability to do what he wants to do. He's run his own band longer than I have, so I don't have to say, 'Hey Bruce, how about…?' He says, 'How about if I try this?' and 'How about if I try that?' And he's Bruce Springsteen — sure, try it."

Both Mellencamp and Springsteen will be on tour throughout 2024.

Mellencamp will be on the road until late July, where he'll be performing at Outlaw Festival alongside Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan.

Springsteen is set to resume his world tour in March 19 in Phoenix with dates in the U.S. and Europe, as he charts his comeback from peptic ulcer disease. He'll also headline the Sea.Hear.Now music festival in Asbury Park, New Jersey for this year's weekend event on Sept. 14 and 15.
