New Brunswick wins 3 more medals at the Canada Games

New Brunswick athletes won three more medals at the Canada Games on Thursday, including cross-country skier Louis Fortin who added another gold medal to his haul.

Fortin won gold in the five-kilometre para Nordic freestyle race with a final time of 15 minutes one second, ahead of the second-place finisher, Andy Lin of British Columbia, who finished in 17 minutes.

“I am very happy,” Fortin said in a statement.

“This is the medal I am most proud of winning out of the three medals.”

Fortin had already won a gold and a silver in other cross-country events earlier in the competition.

Fortin was not the only New Brunswick to step on the podium on Thursday.

Edmundston’s Maxime Emond won a bronze in the men’s judo, up to 100 kg division.

Two other New Brunswickers narrowly missed a medal. Andrew Vienneau placed fifth in the over 100 kg judo division and Jonathan Chiasson in the up to 81 kg division. Vienneau and Chiasson both made it to the bronze medal bout before losing.

Miramichi’s Miranda Dedam won silver in the Special Olympics single level III figure skating.

New Brunswick now has 13 medals in the Canada Games, which are being held in Prince George, B.C.

There were several other strong performances from New Brunswick athletes.

Campbellton’s Lissa Anne McGaghey placed fifth and Lexi McGrath, of Dieppe finished 11th in the women’s singles novice figure skating.

In curling, New Brunswick’s women’s team won a tiebreaker against Team Quebec and against Team Manitoba.

Samantha Rogers and Pascal Roy won two matches in mixed badminton on Thursday. They play Quebec in the quarterfinals on Friday.
