Builders banned from listening to radio

The building earmarked for apartments, with Grimsby Crown Court in the background

Builders will be banned from listening to the radio while converting a former nightclub into homes.

Approval has been granted for a development of eight apartments at 128-130 Victoria Street West, in Grimsby.

However, councillors have imposed an unusual condition because the building backs on to Grimsby Crown Court.

Construction workers will be told not to turn the radio on due to the risk of court-goers hearing news reports about cases being held there.

HM Courts and Tribunals Service initially objected to the development because the building overlooks part of the court precinct, including a secure car park.

Questions were raised about the privacy of court staff and visitors, amid concerns that pictures and videos might be taken and uploaded to the internet.

The service later withdrew the objection after a site visit and an agreement that the applicant would obscure windows overlooking the court, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Cabaret bar

Plans for the development, on the upper floors of the building, include six two-bedroom and two one-bedroom flats.

The space was previously used by the Musika nightclub and a cabaret bar called Secrets, but has been empty since the Covid-19 pandemic.

The ground floor, which is used by retailers, will be unaffected, with the exception of a new entrance lobby for the apartments.
