Burger King could be shut for months after fire

A Burger King restaurant could take months to repair after a fire at a service station area, a manager has said.

Firefighters said they were called to the blaze just off the Fourwentways roundabout on the A11, south of Cambridge, shortly after 04:00 BST.

Crews said the fire was inside a building which housed a Burger King and Greggs bakery.

No-one was hurt and firefighters said the blaze was out and the area safe.

Managers said about 25 people worked in the building.

No-one was in the building when the fire started.

The fire was reported by a Greggs' worker, who arrived shortly after 04:00 for an early shift to find "smoke billowing from the building".

Managers said Burger King and Greggs' staff would be redeployed where possible.

"The staff will all continue to be paid initially and we’ll look to redeploy them at two nearby sites," said Burger King area manager Jason Doe.

"We have two other sites within 20 minutes but some of the staff here don’t drive so that will be hard.

"It won’t be a quick fix. We’re looking at months. It’s quite an old building with a wooden roof, but we will want to reopen here."

Asda runs the Greggs' site.

"We don’t know if it was electrical or arson or something else," said Asda regional manager Alex Georgiou.

"We’ll have to wait and see. But we’ll be looking after the people who worked here."

Cambridgeshire Fire Service said the petrol station at the site was not affected and remained open.
