Calgary entertainment: What to do this weekend

1. Winter Kept Us Warm (1965)

Fifty years ago the first English-language film to come out of Canada got an invite to the Cannes Film Festival. It was also one of the first Canadian films to tackle the subject matter of homosexuality. The screening is Saturday, April 25, at 7 p.m. at CommunityWise (the old Y near Central Memorial Park).

2. Red Riding Hood

A modern twist on the popular children's novel. Until May 9, Storybook Theatre presents the one-act musical on weekends. Recommended for kids six-years-old and older. ​

3. Vintage Retro & Antiques Show

Top pickers and dealers from across Canada will be selling their finds at the Acadia Recreation Complex on Saturday, April 25, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults and free for children 13 and under. There will also be an Antiques Identification Clinic.

4. Hidden Gems Film Festival

The Hidden Gems Film Festival at ACAD will screen English-Vinglish on Sunday, April 26, at 2:15 p.m. It's the story of a quiet, sweet tempered housewife who decides to enroll in an English Learners class and meets a host of new people who teach her to value herself beyond the narrow perspective of her family.

5. Bikes + Brews

The first Bikes n' Brews Spring Classic brings together cycling and craft beer. The event is happening from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.on Friday, April 24, at Tool Shed Brewing Company. The event includes a silent auction to raise money to Kids Cancer Care of Alberta.

Clarification : A website error indicated a different movie was playing at ACAD on Sunday. The Hidden Gems Film Festival movie will be English-Vinglish, not Namesake.(Apr 24, 2015 6:43 PM)
