Calgary news, weather and traffic for Oct. 6

Good morning Calgary! It's partly cloudy and 2 C at 8:10 a.m. Here's what's happening in the city this morning.

It's a pretty straightforward forecast — we're looking at sunshine and a high of 18 C today, and similar temperatures through the rest of the week and into the weekend, with a high of 15 C expected tomorrow and a high of 19 C in the forecast for Thursday.

We have multiple incidents to report at 8:10 a.m:

- There is a stalled vehicle on southbound Deerfoot Trail, just south of Memorial Drive, blocking the left hand lane.

- There's also a collision on eastbound Crowchild approaching 32nd Avenue N.W.

- And finally, there's a collision on westbound 17th Avenue as it passes over Deerfoot Trail.

News headlines

The Calgary Police Service has made a decision on a new chief. CBC News has learned that CPS Deputy Chief Roger Chaffin will be promoted to the top job later today. Chaffin has been with the force since 1986, and he is currently in charge of the bureau of organizational support.

He also sits and serves on several boards and committees including co-chairing the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police Ethics Committee. City council is expected to approve the decision later this afternoon.

A report released this morning has found despite the challenges facing our city this year, Calgarians remain optimistic about their quality of life. The Vital Signs survey is published annually by the Calgary Foundation, and according to this year's report, Calgary's overall quality of life is holding steady with a grade of B. However, the report notes 49 per cent of people would struggle if their paycheque was delayed for one week.
