Calgary police hunt for culprit who started fire at St. Mary's Cathedral
Calgary police hope someone has seen something.
A fire was set at St. Mary's Cathedral in Calgary last Friday and police are hoping security camera images will help them find the culprit.
First responders were called to the church at 219 18th Avenue S.W. in the early hours of May 19 for a deliberately set fire, police said in a Thursday release.
Church staff told police a man charged at them when they opened a back door to investigate a noise outside.
"The two men were able to close the door and get to safety while the man continued to attempt to gain entry into the church. The men called 911 and the fire was extinguished upon the Calgary Fire Department's arrival."
Police have shared security camera images of the suspect, who they say is between 35 and 45 years of age with a bald head. He's about 180 pounds (82 kilograms) and roughly six feet tall (183 centimetres).
The incident is being looked at as a possible hate crime.
