Calgary police officer charged with sexual assault following ASIRT investigation

A Calgary police officer has been charged with sexual assault following an Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) investigation.

The provincial agency was directed in October 2020 to investigate allegations made about an off-duty officer with the Calgary police.

In a news release, ASIRT said the results of its probe were sent to the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service, which "was of the opinion that the evidence did meet their standard for prosecution."

Neither ASIRT nor the Calgary Police Service provided details of the allegations.

"We know that serious allegations of this nature involving the conduct of serving members, even while off-duty, can impact the trust and confidence the public has in us," said a CPS statement.

"We take these matters very seriously and remain committed to thorough and transparent accountability with the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team."

CPS said the officer has been relieved from duty with pay.

Brandon Kan, a five-year member of the force, was charged with sexual assault Wednesday. He was released and is scheduled to appear in court next month.
